Mark Cuban Slams High-Deductible Health Insurance as ‘scam’.

Entrepreneur Mark Cuban has weighed into the debate over the U.S. health insurance system, taking to social media to call out what he describes as a “scam” that leaves many Americans with little practical coverage despite steadily rising costs.

“The real health insurance scam is that they know as their deductibles go up, fewer people can afford to use their insurance. Which means they don’t have insurance. Despite having to pay premiums,” Cuban wrote in a widely shared post on X.

He argued that as deductibles climb beyond the reach of the average consumer, many patients find themselves unable to use their insurance at all, effectively making them uninsured.

“It may sound counterintuitive, but if you can’t afford your deductible, you MIGHT be better off not getting insurance,” Cuban added, highlighting the growing disconnect between health insurance coverage and actual access to care.

Cuban, best known for his role as a star investor on television’s “Shark Tank” and as the founder of the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company, has been a vocal critic of inefficiencies and high costs in American healthcare. His pharmaceutical company aims to disrupt the prescription drug market by offering medications at transparent, low prices, cutting out traditional middlemen.

In his recent series of posts, Cuban also pointed out that paying cash directly to healthcare providers can sometimes yield better deals than going through insurance. “ When you need care, primary, preventive or worse, your doctor or hospital has financing plans. And, their cash price that they finance will be cheaper than what your insurance company or employer negotiated,” he wrote, urging consumers to explore options outside conventional insurance networks.

“There is still a lot of work to be done before this is easy and convenient. But it’s starting to happen,” he acknowledged, noting that the systems needed to make direct payments simple and accessible remain in development.

Nevertheless, the former Dallas Mavericks owner encouraged Americans to seek out providers willing to work directly, saying, “Now is the time to find a doctor who is willing to work with you directly and let you pay them directly. See what works for you.”

Cuban’s comments come amid the widespread sense of crisis around traditional health insurance and growing interest in alternatives, such as health sharing ministries and healthshare organizations.

Healthshares are cooperative arrangements in which members contribute to pooled funds that are used to pay for each other’s medical expenses. While not insurance in the legal sense and not regulated as such, healthshares can provide a healthcare solution often at a lower monthly cost than typical insurance premiums.

For Americans facing unaffordable deductibles and premiums, healthshares may offer a viable alternative.

Cuban’s remarks underscore a broader frustration with the U.S. health insurance landscape, where rising costs can leave even insured patients struggling to access care, particularly in the ACA Marketplace where some insurers are now withdrawing their offers due to the spiraling costs.

Whether through direct payment, low-cost drug programs, or participation in healthshare arrangements, a growing number of Americans are looking beyond traditional insurance for solutions that put affordability and access first.
